Kotlin 101: How to communicate via Serial Connection Part 1

In this tutorial I will be taking you through writing an android app in Kotlin that can connect to and communicate with a device via a serial connection

This will include working with a Serial Library to send data and communicate with a connected device. We will also be looking at Broadcast recievers to connect to the device.

Majid Bahmani : Thank you. this is great. However, it seems that there is an issue in the command (serial.setDataBits(UsbSerialInterface.DATA_BITS_7);). it does not work and it does not change to 7bits it always work as 8bits.
Scott Nicholson : So I did all the steps to import the library. But In the next video USBSerialDevice does not show up as something I can use and I am asked to define it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you. Here is my code:
dependencies {
implementation fileTree(dir: 'libs', include: ['*.jar'])
implementation"org.jetbrains.kotlin:kotlin-stdlib-jdk7:$kotlin_version"
implementation 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:28.0.0'
implementation 'com.android.support.constraint:constraint-layout:1.1.3'
implementation 'com.android.support:design:28.0.0'
testImplementation 'junit:junit:4.12'
androidTestImplementation 'com.android.support.test:runner:1.0.2'
androidTestImplementation 'com.android.support.test.espresso:espresso-core:3.0.2'
implementation "org.jetbrains.anko:anko-commons:0.10.8"
implementation "com.github.felHR85:UsbSerial:6.0.6"
}
allprojects {
repositories {
google()
jcenter()
maven { url "https://jitpack.io" }
}
}
Pablo : Hi, do i need to root my android device for this to work? works in any android version?
Vasu Gupta : The part of the video is unclear when you dragged something and it showed up as compile... Where did you get that from?
Jules Ham : This is great! Looking forward to part 2

USB Serial Communication

Communication between a USB host (PC, Raspberry Pi, etc) and embedded microcontroller (Teensy 3.2), USB communication modes, serial packetization, and programming are discussed.
jesus castillo : Thank you for the information.
Microlatina Microcontrol : Is this an MCU with a serial to USB adapter ? The Arduino code is in here: https://github.com/cmcmurrough/cse2100 under \cse2100-master\cse2100-master\teensy\serial_communication_variable\ but there is no hardware description. The "PC" side is missing. Seems to be a simple emulation done over a regular USB cable, forgive me if I'm wrong, or the adapter on the Arduino side does the job. The Arduino software is really basic, and there are no D- and D+ ports at all. A real shame.
whkiess : Great video and thorough explanation. May I suggest you use a lapel mic or desk mic so your voice doesn't sound so "roomy".
Bryan Dredge : Great example, good explanation and clear directions. Is the arduino code available anywhere for download ?
Arcane Ben : Somebody should start a trend, to post the code in the comments section of each 2100 lab video
